At The Reading Specialists, we’re passionate about equipping children with the tools they need to become confident and successful readers. We constantly explore evidence-based approaches to reading intervention, and the UFLI’s (University of Florida Literacy Institute) Foundations program is one of the supported and utilised programs at The Reading Specialists.

Developed by the University of Florida’s Literacy Institute, Foundations is an explicit and systematic phonics program. This means it provides clear and structured instruction in the relationships between letters and sounds (phonics), a foundational skill for reading success.

 

Strengths of the UF Literacy Institute’s Foundations Program:

  • Systematic and sequential: The program follows a carefully designed sequence, ensuring children build skills step-by-step. This logical progression allows them to master basic concepts before moving on to more complex ones, fostering a strong understanding of the alphabetic code.
  • Aligned to reading science: UFLI is grounded in the “Science of Reading”, which emphasises the importance of explicit phonics instruction for developing foundational reading skills. This means it directly targets the skills needed for students to decode words and become fluent readers.
  • Multisensory learning: Foundations incorporates a variety of activities that engage different learning styles. This might include visual aids, auditory instruction, and kinesthetic activities like manipulating letters. This multisensory approach caters to individual learning preferences and helps solidify learning.

Evidence-based enhancements to our program

 

At The Reading Specialists, we continuously refine our evidence-based interventions to support students with Dyslexia. Recognising the specific challenges irregular words present, we’ve incorporated three innovative methods into our Irregular Word Program, leveraging a child’s existing orthographic knowledge (understanding of written word patterns).

What are irregular words?

Irregular words represent a departure from the expected letter-sound relationship established through phonics instruction.

Unlike regular words, where letters consistently correspond to their most common sounds (e.g., C-A-T = “cat,”) irregular words exhibit ‘irregularities not seen frequently in other English words (e.g., “said,” “though”). These inconsistencies necessitate developing strategies to learn how to read and spell irregular words, e.g., the ‘AI’ in ‘said’ makes an /e/ sound. The ‘s’ and the ‘d’ still follow letter-sound rules and so phonics instruction is still relevant when reading irregular words.

Teaching irregular words presents a challenge for children with Dyslexia or reading difficulties, so it’s essential to use evidence-based strategies to ensure that this improves alongside explicit phonics instruction. After a recent overview of evidence-based programs, we have found three strategies that will help improve the literacy of our students.

Research-driven strategies for success:

 

  1. Targeted multisensory instruction: We now utilise the “Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check” strategy specifically for irregular words. This multisensory approach reinforces the visual memory of these challenging spellings, promoting accurate recall.
  2. “Heart Words” integration: Our program now incorporates the research-validated “Heart Words” list developed by the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI). These high-frequency irregular words are critical for reading fluency and can be memorized for automatic recognition, reducing cognitive load during reading.
  3. Phonics-based strategy for advanced learners: For students with strong phonics skills, we implement the Mispronunciation Correction Strategy. This involves pronouncing the irregular word phonetically, allowing your child to bridge the sound-symbol relationship and utilise their existing phonics knowledge to accurately spell the word.

We understand that each child possesses a unique learning style. To optimise irregular word acquisition, our evidence-based interventions are tailored to these individual styles. By offering three distinct, research-supported programs, we can select the most effective option for each student. This decision is informed by our experience working 1:1 with our students and the strong working relationships we build.

  • Enhanced reading and spelling accuracy: By strategically targeting irregular words and strengthening orthographic memory, your child will develop greater confidence and accuracy in their literacy abilities.
  • Solidified phonics foundation: The Mispronunciation Correction Strategy further strengthens phonics skills, empowering students to independently tackle irregular words they encounter.
  • Improved reading fluency: Automatic recognition of high-frequency “Heart Words” significantly improves reading speed and comprehension.

One of our programs – Cracking the ABC Code

Cracking the ABC Code is a reading program developed by Dr. Lillian Fawcett to help those with reading and spelling difficulties. This program uses a multisensory approach to delivering direct, systematic and structured evidence-based literacy intervention. Cracking the ABC Code has shown evidence in being effective in improving reading accuracy, spelling and reading comprehension.

Cracking the ABC Code has been successfully completed by hundreds of students of all ages in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand and the United States of America. It is also approved for use by SPELD, a not-for-profit organisation focused on finding early support and intervention for those with learning difficulties

The Cracking the ABC Code program targets gaps in the following:

  • Letter-sounds and digraphs
  • Sight word reading and spelling
  • Vocabulary
  • Phonological awareness
  • Reading accuracy and fluency
  • Syllabification

The Cracking the ABC Code treatment program has an intensive approach, which is shown to give the best outcomes, however, the mode of delivery is flexible depending on each individual’s circumstances. There is a choice of either:

a) One session with a specialist with four ‘homework’ sessions with a parent or carer per week, or;

b) Five sessions per week with a reading specialist

Option a) requires the parent/carer to be present at every scheduled session with the specialist, so the specialist can present and demonstrate the lesson. The parent/carer will then replicate the lesson during the ‘homework’ sessions.
