Evidence-based enhancements to our program

At The Reading Specialists, we continuously refine our evidence-based interventions to support students with Dyslexia. Recognising the specific challenges irregular words present, we’ve incorporated three innovative methods into our Irregular Word Program, leveraging a child’s existing orthographic knowledge (understanding of written word patterns).

What are irregular words?

Irregular words represent a departure from the expected letter-sound relationship established through phonics instruction.

Unlike regular words, where letters consistently correspond to their most common sounds (e.g., C-A-T = “cat,”) irregular words exhibit ‘irregularities not seen frequently in other English words (e.g., “said,” “though”). These inconsistencies necessitate developing strategies to learn how to read and spell irregular words, e.g., the ‘AI’ in ‘said’ makes an /e/ sound. The ‘s’ and the ‘d’ still follow letter-sound rules and so phonics instruction is still relevant when reading irregular words.

Teaching irregular words presents a challenge for children with Dyslexia or reading difficulties, so it’s essential to use evidence-based strategies to ensure that this improves alongside explicit phonics instruction. After a recent overview of evidence-based programs, we have found three strategies that will help improve the literacy of our students.

Research-driven strategies for success:

Targeted multisensory instruction: We now utilise the “Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check” strategy specifically for irregular words. This multisensory approach reinforces the visual memory of these challenging spellings, promoting accurate recall.
“Heart Words” integration: Our program now incorporates the research-validated “Heart Words” list developed by the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI). These high-frequency irregular words are critical for reading fluency and can be memorized for automatic recognition, reducing cognitive load during reading.
Phonics-based strategy for advanced learners: For students with strong phonics skills, we implement the Mispronunciation Correction Strategy. This involves pronouncing the irregular word phonetically, allowing your child to bridge the sound-symbol relationship and utilise their existing phonics knowledge to accurately spell the word.

By offering three distinct, research-supported programs, we can select the most effective option for each student. This decision is informed by our experience working 1:1 with our students and the strong working relationships we build.

Solidified phonics foundation: The Mispronunciation Correction Strategy further strengthens phonics skills, empowering students to independently tackle irregular words they encounter.
Improved reading fluency: Automatic recognition of high-frequency “Heart Words” significantly improves reading speed and comprehension.
